What if i need Aluminium and Magnesium castings from the same pattern?


Answer
Where both Aluminium and Magnesium products are required, there may need to be a change made to the patterns running system. This is mainly due to the characteristics of the Magnesium material.

How do i machine Magnesium is it dangerous?


Answer
Many of our long term customers machine their castings in-house with little danger, Fires are prevented ensuring that the swarf and chips are collected thoroughly at regular intervals. Additional information about machining magnesium can be found on Magnesium Elektrons website.

Question
Will my castings corrode over time?


Answer
Unprotected Magnesium will corrode when subjected to adverse weather conditions, this can be inhibited with the use of powder coating. Where castings will be subject to adverse conditions they can be manufactured in Elektron 21, this new magnesium has an excellent resistance to corrosion should this be of primary concern.

Why are Magnesium castings usually black in colour?


Answer
Because of the corrosion problems associated with Magnesium castings, they are all coated with a protective finish called Chromate. This is a very thin coating that also acts as a key for paint or the powder coating process.
